Can Dermal Fillers Be Reversed?

The purpose of dermal fillers is to smooth lines and restore volume to the face by injecting a gel-like substance directly under the skin. Patients who don’t like the procedure results might wonder if it’s possible to remove or undo dermal fillers. Here’s what you need to know about reversing this procedure.

Can You Reverse Dermal Fillers?

Yes, it’s possible to remove dermal fillers as long as a dermatologist uses a product that contains hyaluronic acid.

Hyaluronic acid is a fluid that naturally exists in the human body. Hyaluronic acid injections are a popular treatment for smoothing wrinkles and lines.

A dermatologist can inject an enzyme known as hyaluronidase to dissolve hyaluronic acid fillers. Depending on the quantity of hyaluronic acid used, hyaluronidase will partially or wholly dissolve the dermal fillers.

If you opted for a different type of dermal filler that doesn’t use hyaluronic acid, your dermatologist might be able to remove the fillers partially with a steroid injection. It’s also possible to remove fillers surgically, but it’s not a standard treatment option.

How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last?

Dermal fillers aren’t a permanent solution. If you’re unhappy with the results, keep in mind that your system will metabolize the fillers within six months to two years. Plus, the fillers will become less noticeable as time goes by.

Touching Up Dermal Fillers

If the outcome of your dermal filler procedure isn’t what you expected, there are a few different options to consider:

  • Your dermatologist can use massaging techniques to correct the appearance of the fillers and spread the product more evenly.
  • If the result isn’t symmetrical, additional injections can correct the appearance of your dermal fillers.
  • You can choose to have further injections done after partially removing or correcting the fillers with hyaluronidase.
